Frequently Asked Questions
Does Shire ENT Specialists treat children?
At Shire ENT Specialists we treat both paediatric and adult patients.
Do I need a referral from a GP?
A GP referral allows you to receive the Medicare rebate to cover a substantial portion of your consultation fees. It also allows your GP to send your detailed medical history which is essential for your specialist to review. Following consultation, your ENT specialist will write back a detailed correspondence outlining the key recommendations in your care.
Do I receive the Medicare rebate?
Medicare card holders with a valid referral from their GP or other specialist are able to claim the Medicare rebate.
How long is a referral valid for?
GP referrals are valid for 12-months and referrals from other Specialist are valid for 3-months. The referral starts from the date the specialist first meets the patient, not the date issued.
Can I use a referral made out to a different specialist to attend your clinic?
You don’t need the referral to specify a particular specialist. Patients can choose where to present the referral.
What does Private Health Insurance cover?
Private health insurance does not cover the cost of consultations (unless you are an international visitor with travel insurance). Your private health insurance policy covers you for in-hospital services however there may still be an excess payable for your stay. Your level of excess is dependent on the type of policy you elect to take out.
Is there parking available at Shire ENT Specialists?
Secure on site parking is available via Hinkler avenue. When turning onto Hinkler avenue from Kingsway, the parking gate will be located on your left. Dial “5” and the bell icon on the intercom and one of our staff members will open the access gate. Take the lift up to the ground level.
